Magnetar in a Young Low Mass Binary System?

چکیده
We suggest that the unique X-ray source 1E161348-5055 at the centre of the supernova remnant RCW 103 consists of a neutron star in close orbit with a low mass main sequence star. The time signature of 6.67 hr is interpreted as the neutron star’s spin period. This requires the neutron star to be endowed with a high surface magnetic field of ∼ 10 G. Magnetic or/and material (propeller) torques are able to spin rapidly the young neutron star down to an asymptotic, equilibrium spin period in close synchronism with the orbital period, similarly to what happens in the Polar Cataclysmic Variables. 1E161348-5055 could be the first case of a magnetar born in a young low mass binary system. A VLT/FLAMES survey for massive binaries in Westerlund 1: II. Dynamical constraints on magnetar progenitor masses from the eclipsing binary W13
Context. Westerlund 1 is a young, massive Galactic starburst cluster that contains a rich coeval population of WolfRayet stars, hotand cool-phase transitional supergiants, and a magnetar. Aims. We use spectroscopic and photometric observations of the eclipsing double-lined binary W13 to derive dynamical masses for the two components, in order to determine limits for the progenitor masses of the...

متن کاملUnveiling the X-ray point source population of the Young Massive Cluster Westerlund 1
Aims. We investigate the nature of the X-ray point source population within the Young Massive Cluster Westerlund 1. Methods. Chandra observations of 18 ks and 42 ks were used to determine the X-ray properties of emitters within Wd 1, while a comprehensive multiwavelength dataset was employed to constrain their nature. Results. We find X-ray emission from a multitude of different stellar sources...
متن کاملA long-period, violently variable X-ray source in a young supernova remnant.
Observations with the Newton X-ray Multimirror Mission satellite show a strong periodic modulation at 6.67 +/- 0.03 hours of the x-ray source at the center of the 2000-year-old supernova remnant RCW 103. No fast pulsations are visible. If genetically tied to the supernova remnant, the source could either be an x-ray binary, composed of a compact object and a low-mass star in an eccentric orbit,...
متن کاملThe Most Massive Progenitors of Neutron Stars: Cxo J164710.2-455216
The evolution leading to the formation of a neutron star in the very young Westerlund 1 star cluster is investigated. The turnoff mass has been estimated to be ∼ 35 M⊙, indicating a cluster age ∼ 3 − 5 Myr. The brightest X-ray source in the cluster, CXO J164710.2-455216, is a slowly spinning (10 s) single neutron star and potentially a magnetar. Since this source was argued to be a member of th...
